Pride open conference play with 3-0 win behind second half flurry
PARKVILLE, Mo. - Getting their first taste of action in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, the Clarke University women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win behind three second half goals on Saturday afternoon in Parkville, Mo. against Park University.
Bailey Wiemann was able to get the Pride on the board after a scoreless first half that saw both teams combine for 10 shots where five of CU's six first half shots went on net but Park keeper Delaney Duke was up to the task making all five saves necessary to keep the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
Clarke's Faith Krapfl was only tasked to make two saves in the entirety of the game for her fourth shutout of the year as her two saves came in the first half to keep the score tied at 0-0.
Wiemann broke through with her first of two goals in the second half in the 57th minute as she was able to win a bouncing ball in the 18-yard box and fire it past Duke for the first goal of the game.
Just about 20 minutes of game time later Wiemann would make a strong defensive play to set up an offensive rush as she created a turnover in Clarke's offensive half, allowing Laryssa Pritchard to find a streaking Hailey Packer down the right wing as Packer would send a low cross into the box for Wiemann to finish off a header into the back of the net for her second of the game and fourth goal of the season.
The game was put on ice in the 86th minute when Onesty Lopez sent Jayden Black a through ball behind the Pirates defensive back line where Black would shield off a defender on her back to slide the ball past Duke for her second goal of the season, making it 3-0 Pride with just under five minutes to go.
Clarke women's soccer will take their 1-0 start in the Heart into another road game to start conference play as they'll travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa on Sept. 18 for a 5:30 p.m. CT kickoff against William Penn University.
