Second Half Goals Propel Pride Over Tigers

Second Half Goals Propel Pride Over Tigers

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa – The Clarke University women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Iowa Wesleyan 3-1 on Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon.

Iowa Wesleyan struck first when Sophomore Baylee Alvarado scored in the 11th minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage over the Pride. That would mostly be it for the Tiger offense as they could only muster one other shot on net, which came earlier in the half.

The Pride were looking for that offensive spark, when Junior Reese Castanon was fouled in the box around the 55th minute mark and awarded a penalty kick. Castanon beat Tiger keeper Cheleena Squibb on her left side and tied the score at one. A few minutes later, Pride Freshman Samantha Rodriguez set up Senior Genevieve Cruz on a perfect lead pass, but Cruz pushed it wide-left and the scored remain tied.

Sophomore Faith Bower made the most of her minutes and scored her first career goal on a quick turnaround shot that appeared to go through multiple Tiger defenders to put the Pride up 2-1 in the 74th minute. Castanon scored her second goal of the game and put the Tigers away when she was led and fed on an unselfish play by Genevieve Cruz.

The Pride women's soccer will host Cornell College on Friday September 9th at 7 p.m. CDT at Burrows Field.
