Pride come up short in 15-13 loss to William Penn

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Looking to back up their first win of the 2022 season with their first winning streak of the season, the Clarke University women's lacrosse team battled to a 15-13 loss against William Penn on Monday evening.

The deciding factor was the third quarter where the Statesmen outscored the Pride 5-2 compared to every other period being 4-3 where CU won the second and fourth quarters and William Penn had a one-goal advantage in the opening 15 minutes.

For a majority of the game, injuries forced the Pride to play a player short on the field and for a brief period in the second half they had to play two players short and were still able to keep the game within a three-goal margin at most.

Clarke had pulled the game back from a 12-9 deficit to be down 13-12 with 6:39 remaining in the game but the Statesmen scored the next two goals to pull ahead 15-12 and made an important save on a free position shot attempt with 53 seconds left and cleared the zone to ice the game at 15-13.

CU's Alyssa Humphrey and Emily Moran combined for nine goals and two assists as Humphrey finished with a game-high five goals and added an assist as Moran scored four goals while assisting on another. Jocelyn Lawrence scored two goals, Madison Frey added a goal and an assist, and Cameryn Cox scored her goal of the season for the Pride.

William Penn had four multi-goal scorers with MacKenzie Petersen and Bailee Royal scoring four goals each then Emily Ferguson and Jenna Donlan scored three apiece as Ashlyn Hoffman added the final goal for WPU.

Clarke women's lacrosse will now hit the road for a Friday evening matchup against Midland University for a 4:00 p.m. CT scheduled start in Freemont, Neb.
