Second half shooting tells story in Pride 83-59 loss to Haskell
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Keeping active during their conference bye week with a non-conference matchup, the Clarke University women's basketball team suffered an 83-59 defeat at the hands of Haskell Indian Nations University on Monday night in the Kehl Center.
Haskell's style was unique in the way they deployed their roster, especially in the first half as they employed a full court trapping press defense and subbed in a new unit of five players nearly every two minutes of game action, creating a chaotic pace that led to a total of 41 total turnovers combined between both sides, 22 specifically for the Pride.
With that method of subbing, Haskell played 14 total players in the game with everyone playing seven or more minutes and no one playing over 25 minutes compared to Clarke's starters all playing 25 or more minutes with nobody coming off the bench to play more than 11 minutes.
After entering halftime up 39-35, Haskell used an outstanding second half shooting performance to pull away from CU, scoring 22 in both the third and fourth quarter including a 22-10 advantage in the fourth.
Overall in the final 20 minutes, Haskell shot 16-of-25 (64%) from the field and 9-for-15 (60%) from three point range with the fourth quarter particularly exceptional in a 7-for-9 (77.8%) field goal shooting performance and 5-for-7 (71.4%) three point shooting quarter to get to their largest lead of 27 with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
On the other end of the floor, CU went 8-for-35 (22.9%) from the field and 3-for-17 (17.6%) from three point range including a fourth quarter where they only made three of their 22 shots from the field and one three pointer in 10 attempts.
Clarke's Zoe Kennedy led all scorers with 16 points but finished 5-of-14 (35.7%) from the field with Sydni Morris and Maci Kuchta adding 11 and 10 points respectively and both grabbing eight rebounds.
Five members of the Haskell squad scored in double figures led by Tierzah Penn's 14 points as 12 of those 14 came in the fourth quarter where she went 4-for-4 from three point range as Malia Jacobs added 13, Mahpiya Irving produced 12, Myona Dauphinais scored 11, and Payton Tahahawah scored 10 off the bench.
Pride women's basketball will get back to Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they get back on the road to face MidAmerica Nazarene University with a 12:00 p.m. CT scheduled tip against the Pioneers in Olathe, Kan.
