Clarke's Tina Ubl goes up for a layup with a defender on her back

Pride cruise to 69-49 win over Mayville State to end 2021

BELLEVUE, Neb. - Following a crunch time four-point victory on Wednesday, the Clarke University women's basketball team was able to put up a strong all-around performance on Thursday on their way to a 20-point win over Mayville State.

The 69-49 final came on the heels of a strong fourth quarter from the Comets as they outscored the Pride 22-14 but that was after being limited to just 27 points over the previous three quarters, including scoring seven in the second and six in the third. In each of those two low scoring periods, Mayville State only recorded one field goal in each, a three-pointer in the second and a layup in the third, with the remaining points coming from the free throw line.

"Today showed us that we can bounce back after a very gritty win," head coach Courtney Boyd said. "We executed our defensive plan well and that allowed us to knock down in-rhythm shots."

Giana MichelsEmma Kelchen, and Tina Ubl all had bounce back offensive performances after single digit outputs a day ago as Michels scored a game-high 15 points and the senior forwards Kelchen and Ubl both scored 13. Kelchen had a strong game from behind the arc as she went 3-for-7 from three point range, a season-high from deep for the Bellevue, Iowa native.

Depth scoring came by way of yesterday's top performer Hannah Ambrosy with nine, strong scoring and rebounding game from Nicole McDermott with seven points and eight rebounds, and Mya Merschman also added seven points from the bench. Skylar Culbertson's minutes in her second game back went up in a big way, jumping from eight minutes played a day ago to 22 minutes on Thursday as she grabbed five rebounds and recorded an assist, still not taking a shot from the field yet in her return.

For the Comets, both MacKenzie Hughes and Jordan Zrust scored in double figures as Hughes tied Michels with a game-high 15 points and Zrust added 12, mainly from the free throw line going 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

"This was a great opener for us after break and before we get back into conference play," Boyd said.

This game marks the end of the 2021 calendar year and the non-conference schedule for the Pride as winter 2022 will all be focused on Heart of America Athletic Conference play when they return to conference action on Wed. Jan. 5 when they host Grand View University.
