Pride freshmen standout amid doubleheader losses to No. 4 Baker

OKSALOOSA, Iowa - Needing to make up a doubleheader against No. 4 Baker University at the halfway point of William Penn Unviersity in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the Clarke University softball team dropped a pair of close contests to the Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon by finals of 5-1 and 4-3.

Pride hightlights in the defeats came from a pair of freshmen performances in each game as second baseman Mya Durr had a 2-for-2 game in the opener for her third multi-hit game of her young career as she had half of CU's four hits in the game against BU starter Skylar Gorrell.

In game two, Clarke was in the game the entire way thanks to the strong performance in the circle by freshman Paige Pyszka as she went a complete game six innings in the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with a career-high six strikeouts for the Peru, Ill. native.

The Wildcats only scored one run in the four different innings they crossed the plate as they took an early lead in the bottom of the first that would be tied in the top of the third by an Elizabeth Leverton RBI ground out before Baker would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth at a 2-1 score.

Clarke would then take their first lead of the day in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs first to tie the game on an error on an Abby Archer batted ball then Emma Hodnet gave CU the lead with an RBI ground out.

The top of the Pride order also produced action as slappers Lily King and Leverton both had two hits in the day's finale with King score two of the three runs and Leverton driving King home with that third inning RBI.

This time at the plate, Gorrell would play a big factor as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game once again, this time at 3-3 before the Wildcats would take the lead for good in the sixth inning.

Pride softball will maintain on the road for the remainder of the week as they'll be off for a pair of weekend doubleheaders, first at MidAmerica Nazarene University on Friday followed by a matchup against Evangel University.
