Pride fall in both ends of Friday evening doubleheader against Park

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Hoping to find success back into Heart of America Athletic Conference play, the Clarke University softball team failed to find a way to take one game in their home doubleheader against Park University on Friday evening.

The Pirates used a stout offense to earn a 10-run win in game one by a 15-5 final then pull away to a 10-5 win in the day's finale as they bashed out 33 total hits over the 14 innings.

In game one, Park scored at least one run in every inning, including a two-run fourth inning, three-run third and seventh innings, and a four-run fifth to get ahead and stay ahead despite the Pride cutting their lead after three to 5-3.

The top of the Pirate order just victimized CU as leadoff hitter Macee Austin went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, two-hole hitter Nia Muniz reached base on all five trips going 4-for-4 with five runs scored, and DP and three-hole hitter Kali Day went 4-for-4 with six RBIs including a two-run home run as PU also had a 4-for-4 day from shortstop Halle Magee out of the sixth spot in the order.

Clarke wasn't significantly limited offensively as they finished with 11 hits including a three-hit game from Lily King and two hits from Kaylie Holtam but just didn't capitalize on as many scoring opportunities.

A key sequence in the day's finale was the Pride producing a two-run bottom of the fifth inning to cut a Park lead from 5-2 to 5-4 but in the top of the sixth, the Pirates answered with four runs to push their lead back up to its largest of the night at the time with a five-run advantage at 9-4.

In game two, Elizabeth Leverton and Emma Hodnet combined for six of the team's 10 hits as Leverton slapped three singles and Hodnet had two singles herself with an RBI triple in the Pride's two-run fifth inning.

Clarke will have a quick turnaround from a night doubleheader on Friday to host a pair of home games against Peru State College on Saturday starting right at noon at Veterans Memorial Park to wrap up their weekend.
