Huseman helps Pride split Saturday's matchups

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Clarke University softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Stephens College after a 10-5 win in game one and a 12-4 loss in game two.

The first game saw Clarke get a first inning lead after multiple Stephens College mistakes in the field helped Daija Bates score the first run of the game. Freshman Kaylie Holtam would drive home the second run of the inning. The Stars would score four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead into the fifth inning.

After a pair of Pride singles and a fielder's choice, pitcher Malarie Huseman drove home two runners with help from an error on their pitcher evening up the score at 4 apiece. A pair of singles by Holtam and sophomore Olivia Uecker would give CU back the lead for good as the Stars would score one more time in the bottom half of their fifth.

Starting off the seventh with four straight hits, including a Huseman triple, the Pride would score four more times in the seventh to put the Stars away in game one.

Stephens would finish with six hits to Clarke's 13 as Huseman would pitch a complete game finishing with nine strikeouts with only four walks.

Game two didn't go Pride's way as the Stars were able to score in four of the five innings played, which included a pair of five run innings. One of those crooked numbers came in the first inning after freshman Kennedi LeDuff singled home Elizabeth Leverton to give the Pride a quick 1-0 lead. The first seven batters for the Stars would reach base helping them get out of the first inning with a 5-1 advantage.

The second inning would be the only scoreless inning for Stephens as they would score one run in the third inning, five runs in the fourth inning, and one more run in the fifth. The day was capped off with Huseman, the pitcher from game one, going deep for her first homerun of the season.

The Pride softball team will once again play a doubleheader against Stephens College tomorrow in Columbia with the first game starting at 10 am and game two starting at 12 pm.
