CU Snaps Losing Streak With Win Against Peru State

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Clarke University softball team split its doubleheader against Peru State with a 3-1 loss and an 8-0 (six innings) win on Saturday at Veteran's Memorial Park.

The victory snapped a 24-game losing streak and marked the Pride's first win since March 28. They moved to 8-32 overall and 2-26 in conference play.

In game one, Peru State got on the board with an RBI single to left center in the first inning. The Bobcats tacked on their second run of the game with a solo home run in the third before extending the lead to 3-0 with another RBI single in the fourth.

The CU offense was able to push one run across when Malarie Huseman homered at the bottom of the sixth inning but failed to generate any additional offense after that.

In game two, the tides turned for the better as Clarke erupted with 14 hits. The Pride got on the board early, as Izriah Hodson brought Daija Bates and Payton Morris accross the plate with a two RBI single at the bottom of the first.

CU added in three runs in the third inning, all of which started with Hodson knocking out her third home run of the season. Lindsey Herrmann followed that up with an RBI single to left field before Abby Archer completed the inning by scoring from third off a fielder's choice.

Holding the 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, Bates added in two more off home run to left center, her third of the season.

The Pride closed out the game via an RBI single from Zoie Sellers, who came in to pinch hit with two on base and two outs.

Hermann was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Samantha Stout went 2-for-3. Malarie Huseman picked up the win, her seventh of the season, after throwing for seven strikeouts and allowing only three hits.

Up next, the Pride will head to Graceland University for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.
