Pride drop both ends of doubleheader to Culver-Stockton

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Runs were scored in bunches on Thursday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park as the Clarke University softball team fell in both games they hosted against Culver-Stockton College by final scores of 8-1 and 19-10.

In 14 total innings there were only three instances where any time a run was scored, more did not follow during that same inning as the Wildcats scored seven runs in two different innings, four once, three once, and two runs throughout the pair of games.

Those seven run innings both came in the 19-10 win for Culver-Stockton as they opened the scoring with seven in the second inning as they were then able to add on five more over the next two innings to lead 12-2 heading to the fifth.

Facing the run rule, the Pride pounded out five runs in the bottom half to avoid an early exit from the game and even cutting it to a 12-8 game heading into the seventh inning where CSC would add seven more to go ahead 19-8 before CU closed out the game with two more in the bottom of the seventh.

Offensively for Clarke Daija Bates went 4-for-4 driving in three runs and scoring three more to lead the charge at the plate as Lily King and Malarie Huseman both added a pair of hits in the game.

In the middle of that game Payton Morris, Addison Grimmett, and Olivia Uecker entered for the Pride to produce hits and runs off the bench as Morris went 1-for-3, Grimmett went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Uecker went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

The day's opener started with a single run for Clarke in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead but the Wildcats score two in the third, three in the fourth, and three more in the seventh to push their lead to the eventual final of 8-1.

Clarke's Mercy DeRyke was the lone member of the Pride lineup to produce multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 getting the start at second base.

The Pride will host Peru State College this Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. CT.
