Pride Sweep Sterling College in Doubleheader Action

STERLING, Kan. – The Clarke University softball team snapped a two-game losing streak on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader against Sterling College. The Pride won both games against the Warriors, prevailing 5-2 in the first game and 5-4 in the second.

Malarie Huseman was dominate in the circle for the Pride (6-6), pitching 8.2 innings and collecting 10 strikeouts against four walks.

Lily King and Daija Bates each had three hits while Lindsey Herrmann had two RBIs during the sweep.

The first game of the afternoon started slow for both teams. The Pride notched two runs in the third off of a Bates single to score Samantha Stout followed by Bates scoring off of an error. Clarke would add on another two runs in the fifth when Lily King scored off of an error by the Warriors with Herrmann following that up by grounding out to short, allowing Bates to score from third.

Sterling got on the board at the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI single to right center to bring the score to 4-2. Clarke added an insurance run at the top of the sixth when Izriah Hodson scored from third on a wild pitch to cap off the first game, 5-2.

The Pride returned to game two and got things going much faster that time around, scoring a run at the top of the first when King crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Near the bottom of the order, Stout reached on a fielder's choice, which paved the way for Leah Gray to score. Once back to the top of the order, King singled through the right side to score Stout and extend the lead to 3-0 to end the inning.

An inning later, Mercy DeRyke recorded an RBI single to left field, scoring Herrmann for the Pride's fourth run of the day. The Warriors cut the deficit to two at the bottom of the third off of a two RBI single to right field.

Freshman Aris Tyler was the pitcher putting in work in the circle for the Pride in the second game, striking out four and allowing the two runs in just over five innings of work. Sterling put pressure on the Pride in the sixth inning, forcing head coach Garland Shirley to make a change and bring in Huseman to close out the game.

Trailing by three (5-2) heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors bats came alive to the tune of two runs. The first came off of an RBI double to right center, followed by a sac fly to left that ended the game at a score of 5-4.

Up next, Clarke will return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader with Grand View, which starts at 1 p.m.
