Pride give No. 2 Statesmen all they can handle in 3-2 loss

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In a rematch from the first week of the season, the Clarke University men's volleyball team dropped their second match of the season against No. 2 William Penn University in five sets at the Kehl Center on Wednesday night.

The teams traded set wins through the entire match as the Statesmen took the odd sets and the Pride took the even sets with the set scores finishing at 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, and 15-13 in favor of William Penn.

The fifth set was as tight as it could get with WPU winning by the minimum as the final point was scored on a service ace that trickled off of the top of the tape onto the floor on Clarke's side to clinch the match for the Statesmen.

On the whole, the Pride didn't swing it at a high efficiency rate, finishing the match with a .143 team hitting percentage on 112 total attacks led by a 15-for-40 night from Michael Jenkins as he finished with only eight errors at a .175 hitting percentage while adding six digs.

Montez Thompson was right behind Jenkins with his 10 kills on fewer attempts for a slgihtly more efficienty night at .179 but those were the only two members of the Pride above six kills. Stepehn Lewandowski had the six kills on just 11 attempts for a .455 as he added six total blocks on his night.

The Clarke trio couldn't match the duo from William Penn of Ike Papes and Landon Krause as they combined for 45 kills as Krause hit 22-of-32 with only two errors on the night for a .625 hitting percentage. Papes finished with a match-high 23 kills on 54 attempts but provided CU with 15 points off of attack errors and eight points off of service errors.

Those errors on the serve is part of the story on how the Pride stayed in the match as WPU gave Clarke a total of 30 points on the serve compared to just seven service errors for CU.

The Pride will head into the weekend with one home match each this Friday and Saturday when they host Park on Friday and Missouri Valley on Saturday with Saturday's match being Senior Day for Clarke men's volleyball.
