Pride suffer tough loss at Central Methodist to end regular season

FAYETTE, Mo. - As one of the few soccer games in the Heart of America Athletic Conference on Friday evening, the Clarke University men's soccer team fell by a 6-0 final score to Central Methodist University.

A 41st minute goal from the Eagles' Isaac Johnson made it a 1-0 CMU lead heading into halftime as it would be a dominant second half from Central Methodist that started fairly early.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Koen Schimmel notched an unassisted tally in the 49th minute for his first of two goals in the game as he and Alvaro Perojo scored twice in the second frame with Perojo's coming in the 56th and 86th minutes while Schimmel's second goal came in the 62nd minute.

With the CMU offensive production in the second half, CU head coach Mike Paye made a switch in goal to try and turn the tides as Fernando Contreras got the start and was relieved by Marc Ibanez in the 65th minute where Ibanez would only make one save on his three shots on goal against over 25-plus minutes.

The Pride took 15 shots in the game with only five going on frame for Niccolo Cabras to save on his way to a clean sheet and his sixth win of the season in net.

With Friday's game being the final game of the regular season, Clarke now sits in the eighth and final Heart Tournament spot in the standings with a 4-5-2 record in conference play for 14 points in the standings as the Pride will need a Baker University loss to Mount Mercy University on Saturday to stay in the tournament field, a win or tie for the Wildcats would eliminate CU from postseason play.

If the Pride get a favorable result on Saturday, Clarke would likely be set to travel to Missouri Valley College for the second time this season for the opening round of the Heart Tournament next Friday, Nov. 3.
