Pride Shut Out Eagles

FAYETTE, Mo. – For the first time in program history, the Clarke University Pride football team is over .500 in a season after defeating Central Methodist University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-1. 

Victor Moreno connected on a 28-yard field goal with 6:34 left in the third quarter, giving the Pride the only lead it ever needed. The shutout is the first for Clarke in program history. 

The Eagles (0-3) had a 189-160 advantage in total offense in the game. Quarterback Brandon Mueller finished 10-of-21 for 76 yards and picked up a team-high 49 rushing yards on 10 carries. Sophomore wideout Gabe Deadwiler led all receivers with 31 yards and four catches, while running back Sean Cesar had 41 yards on 14 carries. 

Defensively, Tanaveius Shropshire broke out with a career-high 2.5 sacks and five tackles (three solo). Senior safety Kenneth Spaight led the team with 10 tackles (five solo), while defensive lineman Griffin Mulcahy had a season-high nine tackles (seven solo) to go along with a half sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Brennen Kupfer and Adrian Tamayo each had an interception, while Aaron Fernandez, Johel Gonzalez, and Bryan Valdes combined for six pass breakups. 

Mueller punted five times for 201 yards, averaging 40.2 yards, with two of those ending inside the 20-yard line. 

Both teams played a clean contest from the perspective of penalties, as Clarke committed only one during the contest. 

The Pride will welcome in Benedictine College next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
