CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Relocating another home series due to weather, the Clarke University baseball team was able to take a win on Sunday as Mount Mercy University earned 2-1 and 13-4 wins.
The tight contest in the opener saw both starting pitchers throw a seven-inning complete game as CU's Tyson Tucker and MMU's Kolby Schlotman both struck out 10 batters and allowed five hits but Tucker allowed two runs and two walks compared to Schlotman's one run and no walks.
The Mustangs took the lead in the third inning with a sacrifice fly then extended the lead in the fifth with an RBI single before the Pride attempted to mount a comeback in the sixth inning that fell short after a Bubba Thompson RBI double.
In the second game of the day, big innings from Mount Mercy and Clarke's inability to capitalize more often on their 13 hits in the game led to the Mustangs leading 8-0 after the first two innings and 12-3 after five innings.
CU's Bryce Simon (3-3), Bryce Hinton (2-3), Bailin Markridge (2-2), and Thompson (2-5) all had multi-hit games in the day's finale but those four combined for only two RBIs and two runs scored.
Clarke and Mount Mercy will wrap up their four-game series on Monday back at Plaster Athletic Complex with tomorrow's doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT.
