Melissa Mennig was named most valuable player after each of her three seasons as a member of Clarke’s women’s soccer program. She earned that honor in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and was named the recipient of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) Player of the Year Award in 2004 when Clarke when captured the NIIC championship.
A native of Dubuque and a 2003 graduate of Dubuque Hempstead High School, Mennig came to Clarke after spending one season at Simpson College, where she picked up a varsity letter in soccer as a freshman.
As a member of Clarke’s soccer program, Mennig earned NIIC All-Conference honors in 2004 and 2005. She earned Association of Division III Independents second-team All-Independent honors in 2006.
As a sophomore at Clarke, Mennig scored in all three NIIC playoff games, including the game-winner in a 1-0 win over top-seeded Aurora in the NIIC tournament championship. The three-time NIIC Player of the Week was named the recipient of the squad’s Top Offensive Player Award. Mennig led the team in goals (16), points (37), shots (86) and shots on goal (47), and tied for the team lead in assists. Mennig again led Clarke in scoring as both a junior and senior.
Following her senior season, Mennig was named an ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-District 7 selection.
Mennig currently ranks second in scoring (87), points per game (1.430, goals (38), goals per game (.62) and game-winning goals (6).
While at Clarke, Mennig was awarded a $10,000 grant she wrote for Albrecht Acres. She was a member of Kappa Gamma Pi Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
For the past 10 years, Mennig has served in various positions at The Road Home, a non-profit agency that works with formerly homeless families to help insure that every child has a home. She currently serves as the agency’s program director.
Mennig earned her bachelor degree in social work from Clarke and her master’s degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin.
Melissa and her partner, Jack Steele, reside in Madison, Wis., are expecting their first daughter in October.
