A native of Hopewell, Va., Byrd was a two-year member of Clarke's basketball program. The two-time most valuable player garnered Northern Illinois – Iowa Conference First-Team All-Conference honors following his junior and senior season, and earned Second Team All-Midwest Region honors following his senior year.

A 2001 product of Hopewell High School, Byrd led the NIIC in scoring as both a junior and senior, averaging 19.2 points in 2003-04 and 21 points per game in 2004-05 when Clarke finished 20-7.  He was named to the NIIC All-Tournament team both years.

Byrd served as an assistant coach in 2005-06 when Clarke finished 11-1 against league foes to pocket the NIIC championship.

Byrd's 20.2 points per game career scoring average is the second highest on school charts.

Byrd finished fifth on Clarke's all-time scoring list with 1,085 points.  He currently ranks eighth.  Byrd tallied 556 points during the 2004-05 season, the fifth highest single-season total in school history.  He ranks eighth in three-point field goals (127) and twelfth in rebounding (375).

Byrd shares the school record for three-point field goals made in a game.  He drained eight treys on Feb. 4, 2004 against Dominican University.

Byrd received his bachelor of arts degree in elementary education and his master of business administration degree from the University of Dubuque.

Byrd is a teacher and coach at West Contra Costa Unified School District, Richmond, California.

Byrd resides in Benicia, Calif., and has one son, Joemi A. Byrd.
