Charles John Ellis is a native of Boonville, Ind., and was at Clarke from 1974 to 1978, serving as Clarke’s chairperson of the Journalism Communication Department and teaching mass media and broadcast journalism courses.

A retired educator, Ellis began his career as a teacher and coach at his alma mater, Delphos (Ohio) St. John’s High School, in 1966. From 1970 to 1974, Ellis taught and coached at Tiffin (Ohio) Calvert High School. After his stint at Clarke, Ellis became employed by the Dubuque Community School District. He worked for the school district from 1978 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2006. Ellis served as the school district's director of technology from 1997 to 2006. He was project manager at Hardie Interactive in Dubuque from 1995 to 1997.

Ellis was the recipient of the Tiffin and Seneca County (Ohio) Young Educator of the Year Award in 1972.

Ellis was a member of the City of Dubuque Cable Commission from 1975 to 2008 and received an Outstanding Service Award for the City of Dubuque in 1985.  He was the 1994 recipient of the Dubuque Community School District Business/School Partnership Award.

Ellis received his bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Northern University, his master of science degree from St. Francis College, and his master of arts degree from the University of Iowa.

Charles and his wife, Ruth, have two children, Mike and Jon, and reside in Dubuque.
