A standout on the tennis courts in the early 2000s, Mary Stewart joins the Clarke University Athletics Hall of Fame as an inductee in the class of 2025.
Producing the sixth-most wins in Clarke women’s tennis history, Stewart finished her storied career with a total of 93 wins between singles and doubles play, finishing with a doubles record of 51-17 and a singles record of 40-17 with her 51 career doubles wins placing her sixth in program history.
Competing in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) at the time, Stewart made her mark specifically for the Crusaders at the time in conference play, finishing her career with the most conference singles and doubles wins in a career with 20 singles wins and 22 doubles wins in the NIIC over her four seasons, winning three conference singles championships and the doubles championship in all four of her seasons with a combined 22 tournament matches won to top the Clarke ranks of total conference matches won at 64 helping lead the Crusaders to four-straight NIIC team titles during her career, which went back to seven-straight starting in the 1999 season.
Stewart graduated in 2006 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a middle school math and science endorsement as she would continue her education at American College of Education where she would earn a Master of Curriculum and Instruction in K-6 math.
Working in public schooling systems as an educator, Stewart currently resides in Blue Island, Ill. where she teaches fourth grade in the Blue Island Public School system while also raising her two children, Emma (14) and Ethan (11).
Stewart hopes the Clarke Community remembers that she always loved playing tennis and worked hard at it to improve any chance she got while trying to stay positive and encourage her teammates to the best of her abilities.
