OMAHA, NEB. – Spurred on by a bullpen that surrendered just one earned run on two hits over the final three frames, Morningside University concluded a winning week Sunday, Feb. 27.
Head coach Adam Boeve's Mustangs, moving to 7-1, rebounded from a tough-luck 12-3 loss to Heart of America Conference foe Clarke College by plating a pair of tallies in the bottom of the seventh against North Star Athletic Association member Dakota State University in the nightcap at Jerry Frerichs Field. Sophomore Josh Pratt (LeMars, Iowa) and senior Jordan Kyle (Lake Park, Iowa) set the table for the rally, combining for five strikeouts and not allowing a walk.
Sophomore Gunnar Kale (Merced, Calif.) walked, and senior Braden Smutz (Lake Stevens, Wash.) singled, with both runners advancing on an overthrow to set up second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh in game two. Junior Carter Ades (Sioux Falls, S.D.) singled up the middle of a drawn-in DSU defense, and the two runs scampered home for the victory. Ades finished the contest with two hits and four RBI.
Junior Jayson Willers (Davenport, Iowa) also had a strong Sunday afternoon resume. He turned in five hits over the two contests.
Morningside's schedule now moves to the Sunshine State for the 2022 Russ Matt Invitational beginning Monday, March 7.
