Pride return to action against Grand View as Vikings take defensive match
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Playing in their first match in 11 days, the Clarke University women's volleyball team fell by a 3-0 final score to Grand View University on Tuesday evening in the Kehl Center.
Neither team had much statistical success on the attack with the Vikings finishing at a .058 hitting percentage and CU ending each set in the negatives with their hitting percentage to finish the match at -.053 as the teams combined for 111 digs over the three sets.
Grand View nearly won each set by the same score as the scores went 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 with the third set needing a comeback from down 14-7 as they would go on a 14-2 run and take a 21-16 lead and hold off a Pride comeback of their own to 21-19 and finish off the set 25-20.
Heleine Filipe was the lone player on any team to finish with double digit kills as the Vikings' right side hitter finished with 10 kills on 33 total attacks for a .121 hitting percentage as Sydney Beasley had seven kills, then Ellie Dougherty and Kylie Hoben each had five kills apiece.
Clarke's leader in kills was Keely Colyer as she had six kills on 17 swings while adding seven digs and five assists as both Brittney Mundell and Lily Himmelmann finished the match with positive hitting percentages with Mundell at .143 and Himmelmann at .111 with the rest of the team either being at .000 or negative.
Defensively, the Pride shined from a back row and blocking perspective with CU finishing at nine blocks compared to just five for Grand View with Mundell leading that charge being involved in eight of the nine blocks.
Rachel Haubert assisted on four of the blocks and led the match with a three-set career-high 18 digs as she and libero Rylie Bohanan did a lot of patrolling of the back row for Bohanan to also add 16 digs on the night.
Clarke will continue the week with two more home matches this weekend starting with a Friday night matchup at the Kehl Center against MidAmerica Nazarene University for a 6:00 p.m. CT first serve.
